Dorit Margreiter Choy: Passage
The exhibition Passage by Austrian artist Dorit Margreiter Choy explored architecture as a carrier of historical, political, and social meanings through films, photographs, sculptures, and site-specific spatial interventions. The exhibition examined questions of representation, modernism, capitalism, and the language of cinema.
The catalogue features the exhibition curator Vanessa Joan Müller’s essay Traversing Time and Space, which situates the artist’s practice within the broader context of contemporary art, architecture, and film, as well as a conversation titled The Gallery Space Is Never Neutral between Cukrarna’s Artistic Director Alenka Gregorič, the artist, and the curator. The publication is complemented by extensive photographic documentation of the exhibition and reproductions of the artist’s works.
The catalogue is conceived as a bilingual publication in Slovenian and English. Its design approaches the publication as an object in its own right, while also serving as an extension of the exhibition. Hand-binding with exposed thread, cardboard covers, the use of different paper stocks, and the carefully considered interplay of photography, text and negative space emphasise the catalogue’s physical and spatial qualities. A custom typeface was developed specifically for the publication, based on the typography Dorit Margreiter Choy originally designed for the mobile presented at Cukrarna Gallery at the time of the exhibition.
