Tarek Atoui: Standing Waves
The exhibition Standing Waves by sound artist and electroacoustic composer Tarek Atoui brings together individual works from his projects Wave, Within, and Whispers. This expansive spatial installation offers an experience of listening to a constantly evolving composition—an unconventional concert of sorts—while its setup invites both dynamic and static modes of listening. The resulting sound environment is a sensitive, ever-changing microcosm, rich with sonic textures triggered by various materials, from stone and water to brass and wood.
In creating his works, Atoui reflects on the act of generating or receiving sound through organic materials, incorporating electronic elements as tools to explore their properties, resonances, and acoustic behaviors. His spatial sound installations function as holistic sonic environments, where space, architecture, instruments, and our bodies act simultaneously as receivers and conduits—each shaping compositions built from fragments of acoustic landscapes.
