Anri Sala’s Long Sorrow now on view

From 8 to 27 September, Anri Sala’s video work Long Sorrow (2005) will be on view in Cukrarna’s basement exhibition space. In the nearly 13-minute work, American jazz saxophonist Jemeel Moondoc appears in a surreal scene, suspended in mid-air outside a window on the upper floor of a residential block on the outskirts of Berlin. A characteristic example of 1960s residential architecture, the building was nicknamed “Long Sorrow” by local residents, giving the work its title. 

The projection is part of the exhibition untranquil now – a constellation of narratives and resonances, which brings together more than 20 artists of different generations and from different countries and remains on view at Cukrarna until 3 January 2027. Curated by Dr Corinne Diserens and developed in collaboration with Hamburger Kunsthalle, the exhibition brings together works from its contemporary art collection alongside significant loans directly from artists and from private and public collections. The video projection programme in the basement exhibition space will continue from 11 December 2026 until the end of the exhibition, with Peter Friedl’s Report (2016) and Manon de Boer and Latifa Laâbissi’s Ghost Party (2) (2022) on view.
