New Collectivism

The exhibition presents a selection of books and catalogues designed over the past four decades by New Collectivism (Novi kolektivizem), the design studio of the NSK movement, known for its groundbreaking approach to artistic and institutional design.

New Collectivism (Novi kolektivizem) was founded in 1984 as the graphic design department of the Neue Slowenische Kunst (NSK) movement. NK is also a co-founder of the NSK State (1992). Its founders and members are Dejan Knez (Laibach), Miran Mohar (IRWIN, Scipion Nasice Sisters Theatre), Darko Pokorn (Novi kolektivizem), and Roman Uranjek (IRWIN). The books presented in this exhibition were mostly designed by Miran Mohar and Darko Pokorn.

Since 1984, the design studio New Collectivism (Novi kolektivizem) has been creating books and catalogues both for the needs of NSK and its groups (primarily IRWIN) as well as for external clients. In Slovenia, the studio has designed numerous publications for the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova, the National Museum of Slovenia, and the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana.

In 2000, following an invitation from PS1 – MoMA in New York, New Collectivism (Novi kolektivizem) began designing and overseeing the printing of many of their books and publications, which were produced in Slovenia. These commissions opened opportunities for the studio to collaborate with other international museums and publishers, such as Castello di Rivoli in Turin, Kunst-Werke in Berlin, the Turin and Sydney Biennales, and publishers MIT Press (Boston) and Skira (Milan). The exhibition showcases mostly books and catalogues in the field of visual arts, along with a selection of artists’ books.
