According to Lev Manovich, today’s art is defined by a remix of culture and computer. This new cultural topic is made possible by the huge number of available remix processes, fast data flows, and the various software components involved in the creation of artworks and in artistic reflections on the role of science.
Time Tunnel II is a neuro-semantic, techno-processed performance in the form of an interactive installation. It is constructed as a 3D space through which the visitor moves while observing her environment at the level of the atom and exploring the idea of teleportation and the possibility of teleporting the body at the level of data. The visitor enters the installation by logging into the system using a personal identification number, and then moves through the space for as long as she wishes. At the exit point (/xyz/), her identification number is imprinted on the space and will be visible to each subsequent visitor.
The creators of Time Tunnel II say that the experience is not just about entering a generated space wearing a 3D headset, but entering a semantic network of concepts, ideas and mental patterns. This network is home to consciousness and, above all, intuition, which works on the basis of neural calculation and is capable of perceiving and receiving a large amount of information not previously seen. The bio-networks involved in thinking and consciousness are studied by replicating the environment, which involves mapping an external pattern onto a precisely defined internal one. It is here that the experiment with the brain-computer interface – i.e. a computer system that captures brain signals and analyses them for the purposes of augmented reality – is conducted. The creators believe that when the external pattern is virtual rather than real, it is directly replicated in the form of a virtual image.
Time Tunnel II is a synthesis of two projects, Time Tunnel I by Srečo Dragan and Measurements – Sources of Contrast by Narvika Bovcon and Aleš Vaupotič. In Time Tunnel I, another interactive installation, the viewer travelled through a simulation of space and time in the universe, dramatically changing her perception and understanding of the concept and scale of eternity. This also triggered a switch from the conscious to the technologically unconscious in the network of formal neurons. In Measurements, the viewer entered animations of patterns at the molecular level that had been observed using electronic microscopy.
Project creators: Srečo Dragan, Borut Batagelj, Narvika Bovcon, Aleš Vaupotič; Coding: Kristjan Kostanjšek, Luka Žontar.
The networking experiment connects the Computer Vision Laboratory in the Faculty of Computer and Information Science at the University of Ljubljana, the Department for Nanostructured Materials at the Jožef Stefan Institute, and the National Institute of Chemistry (scanning transmission electron microscope with atomic resolution).
The interactive installation was developed within the framework of the RUK network and first presented in 2023 at the Speculum Artium festival in Trbovlje.
