One of the most influential curators of contemporary art, Klaus Biesenbach, will join Alenka Gregorič for a public talk. His work has played a substancial role in shaping how performance art is understood, presented, and archived in leading contemporary art museums such as MoMA. Klaus Biesenbach is one of the most influential curators and museum directors working in the field of contemporary art and performance. The curator is a co-founder of Berlin’s Kunst-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art (KW) and the initiator of the Berlin Biennale. He gained international recognition during his long tenure as Chief Curator at Large at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and former director of MoMA PS1 in New York. Since 2022, he has served as director of the Neue Nationalgalerie as well as the berlin modern under construction in Berlin.

Over the past three decades, Biesenbach has worked closely with Marina Abramović. Among their collaborations, the landmark exhibition The Artist Is Present at MoMA in 2010 stands out as a pivotal moment in the history of performance art, contributing significantly to its broader international visibility. Biesenbach is widely regarded as an important advocate of performance art and one of the central figures in its integration into museum collections, exhibition programs, and the wider artistic discourse.

The talk is part of the accompanying programme of the exhibition ART VITAL – 12 Years of the Ulay / Marina Abramović.

The conversation will be held in English.
